Introduction

I am good at multiplying fractions because I know how to multiply fractions in two different ways and I also know how to simplify the quotient after.
I am also good at writing reading responses in language arts. I was always able to make a good and thorough connection to the novels I read.

I need to improve on notetaking because I tend to highlight more than what is needed and when I do that I don't always know what information is good to use.
I also need to improve on the BEDMAS integer questions because I sometimes make mistakes when I have negative integers.

My goals for the next 6 weeks are to keep up with all of my school work and try to improve my marks in all of my subjects.

Adult Response

In looking at your work I would like to compliment you on the following 2 things:
1) Work is nice and neat
2) Explination shows Emily's good comprehension of the work.
In the last 6 weeks of school I will help you reach your goals by:
I will make sure Emily completes her assignments and make sure she asks for help is needed.

Math

Term 1 Reflection

This term I learned about ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning. Ratios are a way to compare one part of a group to another part of the group. This is called a part to part ratio. Another type of ratio is part to whole which compares one part of the group to the whole group. Rates are a way to compare two quantities measured in different units. A unit rate is is when you compared it to one. (ex. 5km/1hr.) Proportional reasoning is a relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal.Proportional reasoning can be written in fraction form. (ex. ⅔=6/9)

We also learned abut Pythagoras. The Pythagorean theory is the theory that if a squared and b squared was added together they would equal c squared. (ex. a= 5 b=6)
a2+b2=c2
5(2)+6(2)=c2
25+36=61

I did best on the volume unit during term two. I got 100% on all of my volume tests. I found the formulas easy to use. The easiest shape to figure out for me was the right rectangular prism. Volume was also easy because it didn’t take a lot of work to figure out.
I did really good in math this term but my worst unit would be surface area because I messed up on the unit test. But I did good on the rest of the quizzes.
I will do better next term by making sure I review my work before my tests. I always did my homework but to improve I would take more time to make sure I get the right answer.
I learned that percent could be represented as a decimal and a fraction. You could also represent a percent by using a hundred grid.I l also learned about the percent of a number, and combining percents using basic math strategies. For surface area we learned how to calculate the surface area of a cylinder using the formula 2.p.r.rx2.r.h. We used lxw for a rectanglular prism and bxh/2 and lxw for a triangular prism. During the volume unit I learned how to find the volume of a right rectangular prism using the formula lxw.h. I also learned how to find the volume of a right triangular prism using the formula bxh/2.h and I learned how to find the volume of a cylinder using the formula pi.r.r.h. Lastly I learned how to find the volume of a shape with a peice taken out of it.

I have learned how to add and subtract positive and negative integers using pictures to help me. I also learned that when multiplying integers that if you have zero or an even amount of negative signs the product is always going to be positive and if you have an odd number of negative signs the answer will always be negative. Another thing I learned is that when dividing integers if there is zero or an even amount of negative signs the quotient is always going to be positive and if there is an odd number of negative the quotient will always going to be negative.

The Man Who Planted Trees

How does The Man Who Planted Trees relate to us, to me, to the school and to the local community?
The man who planted trees relates to us, to me, and the economy because we are currently trying to make the earth a better place to live and we are also trying to plant more trees because trees produce oxygen. But along the way we cut down so many trees we have to replant one in its place.

What motivates people and organizations in their approach to the environment? Consider the following factors: money, publicity, votes, community benefits, prizes and awards? What limits their ability to be “green?”

The positive outcomes motivate the people to help the environment such as how it will improve their lifestyle and how it will benefit their community. Organizations are motivated to help the community by the publicity and money that could come from their actions. People running for a government position might be motivated by getting more voets. Money, limits people’s ability to be “green.”

Thank You Ma'am: Friendly Letter

Dear Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones,

I am so very sorry for trying to steal your pocketbook. All I wanted was a pair of new blue suede shoes, but I now realize my actions were wrong. I never should have tried to take your pocketbook. I am very sorry.

Thank you for feeding me lima beans, cocoa, ham, ten cent cake and for telling me to wash my face. Thank you for the ten dollars for my blue suede shoes that I never needed. Your words, “shoes come by devilish ways will burn your feet,” are still with me today. Most importantly, thank you for being so forgiving and not turning me into the police. Thank you Ma’am.

I am so sorry I tried to steal your pocketbook. If I could go back I never would have done what I did. You have changed me forever.

Sincerely yours,

Roger

P.S. Thank you Ma’am

Explore Reading Response

Explore Reading Response Novel Study- Chapter Two

I have finished reading chapter two of Iqbal by Francesco D’Adamo. The genre of this book falls into the realistic fiction category. In the book the author has chosen not to include any illustrations. This book is written as a novel. This book is told in the eyes of Fatima, a ten year old girl who works at a carpet factory in Pakistan. Fatima is working as a child slave to help pay off her families debt.
The author’s purpose for writing this text is to inform the reader about the issue of child labour. I am reading this text to gain a deeper understanding about the ongoing issue of employing children in factories and workshops. These child slaves are forced to work while they should be out playing with their friends and enjoying their childhood, which only comes once in their lives. Child labour is a human rights issue that everyone should be aware of.
The key lines worth remembering are, “One was the sword of a good hero, the other of an evil villain,” “He wasn’t chained because he was a numskull. Oh no. It was for some other reason,” and, “He wasn’t afraid.” I think these key lines are worth remembering because they all involve the protagonist, Iqbal and the antagonist, Hussain Khan. Iqbal and Hussain Khan are two of the main characters. This could foreshadow the main idea and topic of the novel. The key words worth remembering are, hero, evil villain, movie, and child slave. I think hero and evil villain are worth remembering because the hero symbolizes Iqbal and the evil villain symbolizes Hussain Khan. Iqbal and Hussain Khan both have an important role in this novel. I also think movie is worth remembering because the children dream of going to see movies with their families and child slaves is worth remembering because the children at the carpet factory are child slaves. The key names worth remembering are Fatima, Karim, Hussain Khan, and Iqbal. I think Fatima is worth remembering because she is the narrator of the novel. I also think Karim is worth remembering because he is the overseer of the children. I also think Hussain Khan is worth remembering because he is the master of the children. Lastly, I chose the name Iqbal is worth remembering because he is the new child slave. The key place worth remembering is the doorway of the carpet factory because that is the place where the children first saw Iqbal.
Iqbal has been organized in chapters and paragraphs. The author chose to number the chapters instead of titling them because it adds suspense and the reader has to use their “imagination.” The chapters organize the main topics while the paragraphs organize the smaller topics. This makes the novel easy to comprehend, easy to follow, and easy to read.
I can relate to what I just read because I am a child myself, but most importantly I am human. Every human in the world has rights, no matter what culture, age, gender, or size they are. Some pick on others because they are small of because of their background(s) and I know for a fact that is not right. Just because these children don’t have as much power or as much voice, doesn’t mean they could be treated as anything less than human.
My aa-ha moment for this chapter is when Iqbal arrives and Hussain Khan locks a shackle around Iqbal’s right ankle and it isn’t because Iqbal is a numskull. My questions for this chapter are, “Why is Iqbal chained to his loom if he is not a numskull?” and, “Has Iqbal tried to escape from his previous masters?” My connection is child war camps. Child war camps relate to Iqbal because I remember reading if you tried to escape there were consequences. One consequence was being shot to death.
Task: I was required to write a reading response on chapter 5 of Iqbal by Francesco D'Adamo.

Intent: The purpose of this project is to learn how to follow the explore response guidline.

Criteria: To be successful you had to follow the explore response guidline and create a paragraph for each of the sections.
